Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education

Bernstein composed his Piano Trio for piano, violin, and cello in 1937, while he was attending Harvard University. It was premiered in that year at Harvard by the Madison Trio, a student group comprising pianist Mildred Spiegel, violinist Dorothy Rosenberg and cellist Sarah Kruskall. Years later Bernstein reused some of the music from the Piano Trio. The opening of the second movement, for example, found new life in On the Town.

45th Parallel performed Leonard Bernstein's Piano Trio (1937) on October 23, 2009, presented as part of the “Bernstein at 100” exhibit at the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education.
