Galatis in the Garden
Vocals, musical theater, and so much more. This energetic and heartfelt garden concert features Zach Galatis.
Harmonie
Harmonie house bands were often employed in Mozart’s time by aristocratic families to provide music for their social gatherings and special events. Our virtuoso wind players bring that tradition to life for this program of wind sextets and octets!
Flute & Friends
Featuring Zach Galatis, this outdoor event features 45th Parallel ensemble members in an intimate setting with exciting and radiant pieces. Other performers include Marilyn de Oliveira (cello), Matthew Tutsky (harp), and Michael Roberts (marimba).
It’s a String Thing
We close our garden series with It’s a String Thing, a program from the musical mind of violinist Emily Marie Cole. As a member of the mousai REMIX quartet and the Oregon Symphony, Emily has a passion for chamber music and connecting with people, while sharing less common and beloved works. Sit back and relax as we enjoy the musical musings of Emily and friends on the dog days of summer.
Das Lied Von Der Erde
45th Parallel Chamber OrchestraEnjoy an operatic evening featuring Das Lied von der Erde by Gustav Mahler, arranged by Arnold Schoenberg. Composed near the end of his life, in his composition Mahler explores themes of living, parting, and salvation, resulting in a deeply felt musical masterpiece of hope amidst sorrow.
To the Angel who Announces the End of Time
mousai REMIXThe end of time is often perceived as a philosophical rendering of extreme hopelessness and despair, frequently brought on by war. This concert explores these deep themes and extreme beauty, developed during times of war within the human experience. Our program features music by two artists who produced music of great beauty out of grim circumstances: Messiaen’s iconic Quartet for the End of Time, and Germaine Taillefaire’s Quartet.
The Portland School
Pyxis QuartetTop musicians and composers are making Portland their home. The maverick “Keep Portland Weird” spirit and the incredible natural beauty that surrounds the city encourages these artists to create some of their most compelling and exciting work. Join us for an evening of farm-to-music-stand pieces for string quartet, grown right here in the Pacific Northwest.
A Cello Christmas
A Cello Christmas has become a wonderful holiday tradition, and this year we’re thrilled to bring back our ever popular arrangement of the Nutcracker by Duke Ellington, performed by the virtuosos of the North Pole Cello Sextet!
Mississippi Chamber Music Holiday Pub Crawl
45th Parallel Universe presents our 2nd annual Mississippi Chamber Music Holiday Pub Crawl, an exuberant evening of music, food, drink, and holiday merriment. Featuring our beloved Cello Christmas show at Mississippi Studios, the Holiday Pub Crawl also features local singer-songwriter Jim Brunberg as well as other local chamber ensembles with 45th Parallel members in a unique “choose your own adventure” format of attending each crawl location show before the mainstage show at Mississippi Studios. Come break bread with us and be merry with holiday cheer!
New Year, New Akiho
The Gemini ProjectOur program features maximum minimalism, including the world premiere of Andy Akiho’s new piece written for 45th Parallel, plus masterpieces by Philip Glass and Steve Reich, and Daniel Wohl’s mind-blowing Holographic with dazzling visuals by Daniel Schwarz.
A Gay Old Time
Arcturus WindsFrancis Poulenc, a trailblazing figure in 20th century classical music, fearlessly embraced his identity as an openly gay artist during the tumultuous era of the German occupation of Paris. Arcturus Winds brings their virtuosity to this program of Poulenc’s effervescent compositions, featuring some of the most charming music you’ll ever hear, and thus the perfect Valentine’s treat!
In Motion: An Evening with Musical Activist Vijay Gupta
F.O.G.Greg and Vijay raised the roof so high that we couldn’t wait to bring them back for another high energy concert! Vijay’s been widely praised for his work in Los Angeles with the Street Symphony, a community of musicians creating spaces of connection for people in reentry from homelessness, addiction and incarceration in Los Angeles. Soon to be releasing a book, Vijay continues to wow musicians and appreciators alike with his collaborations, brilliant playing, and transformative ideas. This performance is part of a week-long residency with Vijay which will bring 45th Parallel musicians to perform for our social service partners in our community.
Treasured Resources: Water and Music
This concert features a world premiere by local northwest composer Deena Grossman, composer- in-residence with Columbia Riverkeeper, as well as melodic and transcending sounds from composer Yuko Uebayashi, performed by Oregon Symphony Flutes.
Sound… Mind… A Musical Journey with Anna Schaum
mousai REMIXTo celebrate and bring more awareness to Mental Health Awareness Month, this show focuses on highlighting different journeys people have within mental wellness, and how struggles can manifest in unexpected ways. Anna Schaum, musician and mental health specialist, joins the mousai REMIX quartet in unpacking these themes and creating dialogue on what mental health care can look like, what it can mean, and how it can change the world.
After the Revolution: The Life and Music of Chen Yi and Zhou Long
The story of composers Chen Yi and Zhou Long is one of love; for each other and for the music that has led them on a remarkable journey from the forced labor camps of the Cultural Revolution to the US. The critical acclaim for their brilliant music is richly deserved, including the Pulitzer Prize for Mr. Zhou and the Charles Ives Living Award for Ms. Chen. Join us for a special evening of words and music, as we welcome Chen Yi and Zhou Long to Portland for a program that will mix western and eastern music and instruments, with commentary by the composers that provides compelling context to their music.
